We have been off for a few days in the Paparoa National Park it is late August and there is still frost on the ground.

Lynne and I tramped up the Fox River (Paparoa NP) to Dilemma Creek. Soon the canyon walls are closing in on us and I mount up the telephoto to get in close underneath huge tree ferns that are perched a hundred or so above me. A rare photographic opportunity indeed.

We follow the inland pack track through lush forest. Exposures are slow here with very low light under the forest canopy. From time to time we get a peek at the fox river a very delightful deep green colour. This is kaarst country and these limestone cliffs are 300 feet or so high and at this time year in contrasty light.

Vegetation is perched in every available nook and cranny and in many seemingly impossible ones as well. Huge trees around one hundred feet tall flourish on the very edge of these of these precipices.High up on the cliffs there are splashes of white. The NZ native clematis is in flower.

Limestone rocks and outcrops that have fallen from the cliff tops lie about everywhere in the river and make great photographic subjects. We soon learned where Dilemma Creek got the name. For every hundred yards upstream you ford the river 3 times!

All too soon is was time to head for home we walked and photographed all day and did not see another living soul. We hope we will be back here soon! Take all the lenses you can carry opportunities are everywhere.
