We have a picnic at the old sawmill site in the middle of the bay and contemplate what it must have been like when huge glaciers hung in these U shaped valleys carving out a lake 300 feet deep. We are lucky to find that the Totara trees here are in fruit and have a good excuse to get the macro out again. Maori used to gather the berries for food but they are so tiny we marvelled at what a lot of work that must have been
   
 
           
             
 
   
Enjoying Te Kinga ahead us from the boardwalk we return to the Lodge where Janice has coffee ready for us to enjoy on the balcony in the late afternoon sun. A pair of rare and very endangered New Zealand falcons fuss about as they return from a days hunting. What a great day.
 
           
     
The Bain Bay Walk takes about 3 hours return if you take your time. Photographers will take much, much longer! It is a gentle walk suitable for all fitness levels. The Lodge will provide a picnic lunch (guests) for you to enjoy at the Bain Bay picnic area.
