Bain Bay Walk

We leave Lake Brunner Lodge and stroll to the edge of the lake and onto the boardwalk. There is a stiff breeze as we start out. Soon the boardwalk crosses Eel creek and we are walking through huge Kahikatea trees. Kahikatea are New Zealands tallest native tree topping out at 180 feet. They are trees of lowland forest and wetlands and here they stand with huge fluted trunks submerged in the wetland. Large native flax plants line the walkway

Now we come off the boardwalk and onto the beach. Totara trees grow in the most contorted forms with roots completely exposed when the lake is low. These are the most excellent photographic subjects, difficult but if you get the light right or have fill flash you really have got something extremely unusual. Totara is another member of the podocarp family and can grow to be huge.
