Pure Clean Water

Not only does our water supply fail but so do many others in our pure clean and green region for similar reasons. Some as much as 50 percent of the time. (see notice)

In this day and age towns supplies such as this should not be substandard and an obvious health risk.

Lake Brunner

Lake Brunner is a place of special beauty.  Unfortunately it has in the recent past been subject to environmental abuse and is in further danger.

Several years ago Unpure NZ met with the New Zealand Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment to request assistance to look into concerns that lake users, environmentalists, and others had at the lack of action by the West Coast Regional Council related to dirty dairying practices in the Lake Brunner area.

Special area declared

The result of that was that a special water quality area for Lake Brunner and the rivers in its catchments was declared. Despite that “special water quality area project” and the work of many the water quality at Lake Brunner is still in decline.   A new report by West Coast Fish and Game based on West Coast Regional Council water monitoring shows indeed that water quality is still in decline in the lake and it was abnormal for lakes to have such high nutrient levels as were increasing in Lake Brunner.

Fertilisers Found

Phosphorous and nitrogen which occur in fertilizers have recently been found in Lake Brunner and they have contributed to the growth of Algae.  The West Coast Regional Council has recently made claims that it has lately increased prosecutions and infringements.

Unpure New Zealand does not accept that the small number of enforcements to date constitutes any justification for that comment.  They after all only amount to a handful and are akin to plugging a leaking dam with one finger

Creek Trashed

School Creek is a good example. It falls within the Lake Brunner special water quality area.   It is a spawning creek that was trashed by dirty dairy practices yet there was no prosecution even though this was a very serious breach. (see farming page)

In Peril

Unpure New Zealand thinks our waterways and Al lakes are in peril and that our enforcement officials are failing us.

"The 100% Pure New Zealand brand does establish a level of expectation among potential visitors that New Zealand's natural environment will be clean and well cared for. Government, and our tourism agencies, recognize the importance of the natural environment in fulfilling New Zealand's marketing promise. This creates an incentive for all of New Zealand to take action to ensure we live up to the 100% Pure New Zealand promise."

What is going on here in clean, green 100% pure New Zealand?

On a regular basis the small town where I live gets notices like this from our local authority to boil our towns water because it fails testing because of E-coil contamination. In Pure, clean , green New Zealand this seems to be unbelievable! Nearby mountains with pristine peaks and streams bubble down toward the sea. This part of New Zealand has the highest rainfall and the least atmospheric pollution of any part of the country and yet the water is undrinkable a lot of the time. Not far from here is the wettest place in New Zealand, the Cropp River 8940mm per annum thats 350 inches of rain a year! Towns folk here are sick of this. nearby our water intake is the mighty snow fed Taramakau River once a stunning braided river that now is overgrown by invasive plants and polluted by upstream dairy farms.
