Purity Indeed!

The West Coast of the South Island is fortunate to be cloaked in the last remaining major remnant of ancient Podocarp Forest that once covered most of New Zealand. Dating back around 70 million years it is wondrous indeed. Is it 100% pure?

No, sorry it is not.

Tourism

Tourism is one of the most important income earners to the West Coast. More than 1 million tourists visit this area that contains many national parks and forests that are within a World Heritage site. We wish it were pure. Yet, there are those amongst us that do not have even the slightest shred of respect for the ancient forests that surround them. Those persons bring shame and disgrace to those of us that would want to be proud of this place. Not only that - they are quite willing to risk damaging our economy with their disgusting behaviour.

"The 100% Pure New Zealand brand does establish a level of expectation among potential visitors that New Zealand's natural environment will be clean and well cared for. Government, and our tourism agencies, recognize the importance of the natural environment in fulfilling New Zealand's marketing promise. This creates an incentive for all of New Zealand to take action to ensure we live up to the 100% Pure New Zealand promise."
