The end of a River

At this time resource consent hearings are underway for a new hydro scheme on the Arnold. This river is the outflow of Lake Brunner and it flows into the Grey River. There is already a power scheme on the Arnold. Trustpower plans to divert further water from the river to generate further power

This will servely affect the last remaining flows of water in the Arnold. The main users of the river are kayakers, trout sport fishermen and rafters.

Trustpower have done a deal with one group of kaykers that if they will withdraw their objections to the scheme Trustpower will in return build a $2 m dollar white water kayak course! At this stage it looks likely the Kayakers will buy this - selling their souls in return for a plaything!

One person fighting Trustpower is Johnny Groome a world famous West Coast artist. His superb picture painting "Drift fishing the Arnold" is featured (left) Johnny is committed to saving the river you can see Johnny's work and more pictures of the Arnold River here

"The 100% Pure New Zealand brand does establish a level of expectation among potential visitors that New Zealand's natural environment will be clean and well cared for. Government, and our tourism agencies, recognize the importance of the natural environment in fulfilling New Zealand's marketing promise. This creates an incentive for all of New Zealand to take action to ensure we live up to the 100% Pure New Zealand promise."
