Down at the Creek

Standoff pads like this one are supposedly to benefit the individual farmer concerned.

That benefit is at the huge expense of the overall environment and to any downstream communities.

This creek drains directly into the Grey River not far from where this photo was taken. Excessive effluent run off flows downstream.

The photos were taken in July 2007. Complaints were made to Fish and Game and in turn to the West Coast Regional Council.

The WCRC has visited the site several times. It claimed in correspondence that the farm used this area historically in this way for many years. The WCRC attempted to justify the farmers actions on that basis!!

There is indication in the correspondence that the WCRC will allow the farmer to divert the creek away from this area. (Why not move the cows?)

Our investigation into this disgusting mucky mess is continuing.

"The 100% Pure New Zealand brand does establish a level of expectation among potential visitors that New Zealand's natural environment will be clean and well cared for. Government, and our tourism agencies, recognize the importance of the natural environment in fulfilling New Zealand's marketing promise. This creates an incentive for all of New Zealand to take action to ensure we live up to the 100% Pure New Zealand promise."
